Microscopy inspection of the morphology of activated sludge (AS) flocs can provide important information regarding the AS properties, which strongly affect the performance of AS systems.

Digital image analysis has been intensively developed over the last two decades including its application to describe morphology of activated sludge flocs. However, only few studies concerned the variation of flocs morphology with respect to the operational conditions, particularly oxido-reductive conditions, in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).
The sludge bulking or filamentous the morphology of the activated sludge flocs (shape, size, bulking is a common problem in activated sludge plants that compactness, roundness), a phenomenon that cannot be readily ... BACKGROUND Ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) have been suggested to have a lower oxygen half‐saturation index than that of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB), …
It is shown that the morphology of the activated sludge flocs correlates significantly with the settling properties of the sludge, as expressed by traditional settling tests.

· The short-term variations in the activated sludge floc morphology were tested to approximate the sampling frequency of in situ measurement. The results showed ( Fig. 4 ) no short-term variations in floc morphology, indicating that the sampling frequency used in this study (1–2 times a day, 5 times a week) is adequate for optical monitoring.
Activated sludge floc morphology and nitrifier enrichment can explain the conflicting reports on the oxygen half‐saturation index for ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) Jun Wu. Corresponding Author. E-mail address: jun.wu08@gmail.com.
Activated sludge, CST, filterability, floc characterization, phosphorus fractions, sludge indices, sludge properties. INTRODUCTION Problems with sedimentation and filamentous bacteria have shown that there is a need to measure other parameters than only sludge volume index (SVI).
